「魏王貽我大瓠之種,我樹之成而實五石。以盛水漿,其堅不能自舉也;

Huizi said to Zhuangzi, "The King of Wei gave me the seeds of a large gourd. I planted them, and when they matured, the fruit had a capacity of five shi."
When used to hold water, its hardness was not enough to support itself. When cut open to make a dipper, it was too wide and shallow to hold anything.
It is not that it wasn't huge and hollow, but I thought it was useless, so I smashed it to pieces.
Zhuangzi said,"You are truly clumsy at using large things! "
There was a man from Song who was skilled at making a medicine that prevented hands from chapping. For generations, his family's business was washing and bleaching silk in the water. A stranger heard of this and asked to buy the prescription for a hundred pieces of gold.
The family gathered and discussed it, saying: 'We have washed silk for generations, making no more than a few pieces of gold; now, in one morning, we can sell the technique for a hundred gold pieces. Let us give it to him.
The stranger got it and used it to persuade the King of Wu. When the state of Yue invaded, the King of Wu appointed him as a commander. In winter, he engaged in a naval battle with the Yue forces, completely defeated them, and was rewarded with a fiefdom of land.
The medicine that prevented chapped hands was exactly the same thing; yet one person used it to gain a fiefdom, while the other could not escape washing silk. The difference lay in how it was used.
Now you had a gourd of five shi. Why didn't you consider making it into a large buoy to float upon the rivers and lakes, instead of worrying that it was too huge to hold anything? It seems your mind is still clouded and narrow!

Huizi said to Zhuangzi, "I have a large tree, which people call the Shu."
Its large trunk is swollen and gnarled, not conforming to the carpenter's ink line ; its small branches are twisted and do not conform to the compass and square. If it stood by the road, a carpenter would not even look back at it.
Now, your words are just like this: vast but useless, and universally rejected by everyone.
Zhuangzi said, "Have you not seen the wildcat or the weasel?
It crouches low, hiding its body, waiting for wandering prey. It leaps east and west, not avoiding high or low places, until it falls into a trap and dies in a hunting net."
Now consider the yak. Its size is like a cloud hanging in the sky.
It has the ability to be huge, but it cannot catch mice.
Now you have a large tree and worry about its uselessness.
Why not plant it in the realm of absolute Nothingness, in the vast and boundless wilderness? You could wander freely by its side, and sleep comfortably and idly beneath it. It will not be chopped down by an axe, and nothing will harm it. Since it has no place where it can be used, what hardship or distress could it possibly suffer?
