慶曆四年春,滕子京謫守巴陵郡。

越明年,政通人和,百廢具興。

乃重修岳陽樓,增其舊制,刻唐賢、今人詩賦於其上;

屬予作文以記之。

慶曆四年春天,滕子京被貶因而駐守巴陵郡。

到2第二年, 政務通行,人民和樂,

多種荒廢的事業已重新興辦。

於是重新修建岳陽樓,擴大原有的規模,

刻上唐朝賢人和當代人的詩賦在上面,

囑咐我寫文章來記述它(於岳陽樓的所見)。

In the spring of the fourth year of the Qingli era, Teng Zijing was exiled to govern Baling Commandery.


By the next year, the administration was smooth, the people were harmonious, and all neglected matters were revived.


Thus, Yueyang Tower was rebuilt, expanding its original scale, and the poems and prose of past sages and contemporaries were engraved upon it. He entrusted me to write an article to record this.

予觀夫巴陵勝狀,在洞庭一湖。

銜遠山,吞長江,浩浩湯湯,橫無際涯;

朝暉夕陰,氣象萬千。

此則,岳陽樓之大觀也,前人之述備矣。


然則,北通巫峽,南極瀟湘,

遷客騷人,多會於此,覽物之情,得無異乎?

我觀看巴陵優美的狀貌就在洞庭這一個湖。

銜接宏遠的山, 吞納長江的水。

浩大的水勢,橫闊得沒有邊際;

朝早,時晴朗,時陰暗 ; 夕夜,時月色明媚,時灰暗,(互文)

氣氛、景象有萬千種。

就是,岳陽樓的大致景觀,

前人的記述己完備了。


這裏是這的,

北面通向巫峽,南面的盡頭是瀟水和湘江,

遷貶的官員和失意的詩人,多數聚集在這處,

觀賞景物的心情,所得的(難道)會有不同的嗎?

I view the magnificent scenery of Baling, which lies entirely in this one Lake Dongting.

It connects with the distant mountains and swallows the Yangtze River ; its vast and mighty waters stretch boundlessly.


From the morning sunlight to the evening dusk, the atmosphere and scenery vary in a myriad of ways. This is the grand view of Yueyang Tower, and the descriptions by predecessors are already comprehensive.

However, since it connects to the Wu Gorge in the north and reaches the Xiaoxiang rivers in the south , exiled officials and disheartened poets often gather here.

若夫霪雨霏霏,連月不開;

陰風怒號,濁浪排空;日星隱耀,山岳潛形;

商旅不行,檣傾楫摧;薄暮冥冥,虎嘯猿啼。


登斯樓也,則有

去國懷鄉,憂讒畏譏,

滿目蕭然,感極而悲者矣。

假如細密的雨不斷降下, 連續數月不放晴,

陰冷的風憤怒呼叫, 混濁的浪衝向天空;

太陽和星星隱沒了光芒,山岳潛蔽了形體;

商旅不能出行,船桅傾倒,船槳折斷;

迫近日落時昏暗, 老虎長嘯,猿猴啼叫。

登上此樓, 就感有

離開國都, 懷念故鄉,擔憂和畏懼讒言與譏笑(互文),

滿眼蕭條冷落,感慨至極而悲愁的情感。

If the fine, continuous rain falls for months without clearing;

If the cold winds howl furiously, and turbid waves surge into the sky;

If the sun and stars hide their light, and the mountains conceal their forms;

If merchants cannot travel, masts collapse, and oars break;

And if the evening grows dim, with tigers roaring and monkeys wailing

Ascending this tower then, one would feel the sorrow of leaving the capital and longing for home, fearing slander and dreading ridicule. With a desolate scene filling one's eyes, one would be overwhelmed with extreme emotion and sadness.

至若春和景明,

波瀾不驚,上下天光,一碧萬頃;

沙鷗翔集,錦鱗游泳,岸芷汀蘭,郁郁青青。


而或長煙一空,皓月千里,

浮光躍金,靜影沉璧;漁歌互答,此樂何極!


登斯樓也,則有

心曠神怡,寵辱皆忘,

把酒臨風其喜洋洋者矣。

而假如春色和睦、 陽光燦爛時,

波浪沒有泛起半點波瀾,上方的(天空)和下方的(湖水)

都亮著天上的陽光,一片碧光佔著萬頃的地方;

沙鷗在飛翔與聚集, 帶錦鱗的(魚兒)在游泳,

岸邊的白芷與水邊平地的蘭草,是香氣郁清的青色植物。


而有時大霧全部消失,皎潔的月光照至千里,

浮動的光波(隨著波浪)躍起金光,

靜止的月影是沉(在湖)底的碧玉;

漁歌相互對答,這快樂怎麼會有盡頭呢!


登上此樓, 就感有

心情開朗、精神愉悅,榮耀和恥辱都忘記,

拿着酒迎臨着風,心情喜悅。

But if the spring is mild and the sun is bright ,

with no waves stirring, and the light of heaven and the water below merging into a vast expanse of jade green;


If seagulls gather and fly about, and fishes with brocade-like scales swim;

If the angelica on the shores and the orchids on the sandbars are lush and fragrant;

Or sometimes when the vast mist completely clears, and the bright moon shines over a thousand miles , with the floating light glittering like gold and the still reflection sinking like a piece of jade;


And if the songs of fishermen answer one another—what limit is there to this joy?

Ascending this tower then, one would feel open-hearted and happy, forgetting both favor and disgrace. Holding a cup of wine in the wind, one would be filled with boundless joy.

嗟夫!予嘗求古仁人之心,

或異二者之為。何哉?


不以物喜,不以己悲。

廟堂之高,則憂其民;處江湖之遠,則憂其君。

是進亦憂,退亦憂,然則何時而樂耶?


其必曰:

「先天下之憂而憂,後天下之樂而樂。」

歟!噫! 微斯人,吾誰與歸!

唉!我曾探究古代仁者的思想,有相異於上面兩種人不同表現。為什麼呢?


(因為他們)不因外物以及個人(得失)而歡喜,不因個人(得失)以及外物而悲愁。


身居朝堂的高位, 就擔憂百姓;身處江湖的遠處, 就擔憂君主。

這樣進(至高處)亦會憂慮 ,退(至遠處)亦會憂慮


這樣就什麼時候才感到快樂呢?

他們必定說:

「 提早為天下的憂患而憂慮,後為天下的喜事而快樂」


吧!唉!沒有這樣的人,我能和在誰一起呢?

Alas! I have explored the minds of the ancient people of perfect virtue, and they differ from the behaviors of the two types of people mentioned above. Why is that?


It is because they do not rejoice over external things, nor do they grieve over their personal losses.


When placed high in the imperial court, they worry for their people ; when situated far away in the rivers and lakes, they worry for their sovereign.

Thus, they worry when advancing, and they worry when retreating.


When, then, do they find joy?

They would surely say: "Be the first to worry about the world's troubles, and be the last to enjoy the world's happiness".

Ah! If not for such people, with whom could I associate?
