Since I became a condemned exile and lived in this prefecture, I have always been fearful and trembling.
During my leisure time, I would walk slowly and wander aimlessly.
Every day, along with my like-minded friends, I climbed high mountains, entered deep forests, and followed winding streams to their ends. There were no secluded springs or strange rocks we did not reach, no matter how far.
Upon arriving, we would part the wild grass to sit down, empty our wine pots, and get drunk. Once drunk, we would rest our heads on each other to sleep, and while sleeping, we dreamed. Our minds reached their ultimate limits, and our dreams shared the same inclinations. After waking up, we arose, and after rising, we returned.
I thought I had explored all the strangely shaped mountains in this prefecture , but I had never yet known the strange and unique nature of the West Mountain.

然後知是山之特出,不與培塿為類。悠悠乎與顥氣俱,而莫得其涯;

On the twenty-eighth day of the ninth month of this year, as I was sitting in the West Pavilion of Fahua Temple, I gazed at the West Mountain, pointed at it, and began to marvel at its uniqueness.
I then ordered my servants to cross the Xiang River, follow the Ran Stream, chop down the overgrown bushes, and burn the wild grass, stopping only when we reached the mountain's highest peak.
We climbed up, sat casually with our legs spread out, and let our eyes roam. The land of several surrounding prefectures was all beneath our seating mats.
The high and low terrain—the towering peaks and deep valleys—looked like small anthills and ant holes. What seemed like mere inches actually spanned a thousand li. The mountains were crowded and piled together, with nothing able to stay hidden.
Surrounded by green mountains and encircled by white waters, the scenery extended outward to meet the sky; looking in all four directions, it was a single, unified view.
Only then did I know that the uniqueness of this mountain meant it could not be grouped with small, ordinary mounds.
It is so vast that it blends with the primal energy of heaven and earth, and its boundaries cannot be found. It is so boundless that it seems to wander with the Creator, and its limits cannot be known.
I took my cup, filled it with wine, and collapsed in drunkenness, unaware that the sun was setting.
The deep blue twilight arrived from afar until nothing could be seen, yet I still did not want to return.
My mind was concentrated and my physical form felt released, merging into one with the myriad transformations of nature.
Only then did I realize that in the past, I had not truly begun to travel. My true travels started from this very point, so I wrote this article to record it. This year was the fourth year of the Yuanhe era.
