Origins of the Fountain Pen

Early Forms

The history of the fountain pen dates back to the 10th century, when early versions featured a reservoir where ink was directly dripped into the pen shaft. Although this design was convenient, it was prone to leaking, which prevented widespread adoption, and this form persisted until the 18th century.

Key Inventions of the 19th Century

The true development of the fountain pen began in the 19th century, with three key inventions that made it a widely popular writing tool:

  1. Iridium Nib: This nib was durable and provided a stable writing experience.

  2. Hard Rubber: Used to make the pen body, this material increased the fountain pen's durability.

  3. Ink Reservoir Mechanism: This allowed ink to be stored inside the pen body, eliminating the hassle of carrying an ink bottle.

The first fountain pen incorporating these three inventions was manufactured around the 1850s, but it wasn't until the 1880s that mass production began. American companies "Waterman" and "Wirt" were among the leading fountain pen manufacturers of that time.
