History of the Pencil
Early Use
The history of the pencil can be traced back to ancient Rome, where people used a metal tool called a "stylus," typically made of copper or iron, to write on wax tablets.
Discovery of Graphite
In the early 16th century, a storm in Cumberland, England, changed the history of the pencil. It is said that during this storm, a black mineral known as graphite was discovered. Because graphite had writing properties similar to lead but left darker marks, it was referred to as "black lead."
Manufacturing of Pencils
In the 17th century, significant breakthroughs in pencil manufacturing occurred. The Nuremberg Pencil Factory in Germany was established, becoming the world's first factory dedicated to pencil production. They improved the manufacturing process by using a mixture of graphite and clay to create the pencil core, making pencils more durable and providing smoother writing.
Erasers
In the 19th century, pencil development entered a new phase. American inventor Joseph Priestley discovered the eraser, providing the convenient function of erasing mistakes made while writing.
Mechanical Pencils
In the 20th century, the advent of mechanical pencils and non-sharpening pencils further enhanced the pencil experience. Mechanical pencils used a mechanical device to supply the pencil lead, eliminating the need for sharpening, while non-sharpening pencils featured oil-based leads that did not require sharpening, making writing more convenient.
Modern Applications
Modern pencils have diverse uses; they are not only used for writing but are also widely applied in artistic creation, such as sketching and drawing. Pencils of varying hardness (ranging from 6B to 9H) cater to different writing needs.
