Origins and History of the Highlighter
1960 - Fiber Tip Technology
The precursor to the highlighter can be traced back to the 1960s. Japanese inventor Yukio Horie founded Pentel Co., Ltd. in 1964 and developed fiber tip technology, laying the foundation for the invention of the highlighter.
Inventive Ideas:
Horie aimed to create a pen that provided the feel of Japanese brush strokes while also offering the convenience of a ballpoint pen.
The pen tip was made from acrylic fibers and resin, combining hardness and flexibility to create a fine tip that smoothly absorbed ink.
Tiny channels within the tip used capillary action to guide the ink to the tip. The ink needed to be thin enough to flow yet viscous enough to prevent leaking. The pen barrel was designed with an air hole to regulate internal pressure and prevent ink leaks.
After eight years of research and development, this pen was launched due to its solid lines and smooth writing, making it suitable for signing important documents.
1963 - Commercialization in the United States
In 1963, the first commercial highlighter, Hi-Liter, was introduced in the United States. This product quickly gained popularity, especially for its bright colors like yellow and pink, becoming a common tool for studying and note-taking.
