Origins and Development of Chalk

Origin - Medieval Times

The earliest records of chalk date back to medieval times when people discovered that by mixing lime with water, they could create a solid substance that could be used similarly to charcoal to write on dark or hard surfaces.

Advantages of Use

At that time, the production cost of chalk was significantly lower than that of paper, and it did not suffer from the blurriness issues associated with carbon pencils used on wood or stone.

Evolution of Materials (Ancient)

Ancient chalk was typically made from natural chalk, but over time, modern chalk has been largely replaced by other materials.

Evolution of Materials (Modern)

The primary component of traditional chalk is calcium sulfate (CaSO₄). However, due to its potential health hazards, environmentally friendly chalk today often uses calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) as a raw material, which is non-toxic and produces less dust.

Application 1

Chalk is widely used on writing surfaces such as blackboards, floors, and walls, and it is also utilized by many artists in their creative work.

Application 2

In Taiwan, police use chalk to write vehicle license plate numbers, impound lot names, and contact numbers on the ground after ticketing or towing illegally parked vehicles, making it easier for owners to pay fines and retrieve their vehicles.

Colored Chalk

Colored chalk is made by mixing the aforementioned materials with colorants; some manufacturers also add talcum powder or titanium dioxide to their chalk.
